Session 3 - budgeting

  • An icebreaker teaching participants about what are essential and non-essential items
  • An exercise showing what you need and what you don't need
  • A table to use to identify money coming in and money going out
  • A handout to help participants idenfity where all their money goes.
  • A case study about an offender for participants to identify how much money he has and what he needs to buy, and what is left.
  • A handout with top tips providing some helpful advice and recommendations on how to make your money go further by budgeting, shopping around, prioritising spending.
  • Keep Warm; Keep Well - a leaflet providing advice and tips on keeping warm and healthy during the winter months, especially around heating the home, fuel efficiency and sources of financial help to heat your home.

Session 7 - income, insurance and pensions

  • An icebreaker exercise around national income showing how all taxes (direct and indirect) that are raised by the government are spent and on which public services.
  • On income, it includes handouts on classes of National Insurance contributions, tax codes and what they mean, different tax allowances available, how to complete the income tax self-assessment.
  • On insurance, it includes handouts on different risks in life which insurance can cover and types of insurance available broken down by different areas of protection.
  • Information providing help and advice with tax issues.
  • A leaflet produced by the charity UNLOCK which campaigns on behalf of offenders and ex-offenders on financial matters helping them to gain fairer access to banking, insurance and employment opportunities. This leaflet provides information on accessing insurance for people with an unspent or spent conviction.
