Helping Consumers through the Recession
This week, we held a successful Financial Capability conference on 'Helping Consumers through the Recession', which explored ways to reach people facing redundancy, the unemployed and hard-pressed families. The conference also included a welcome from Sarah McCarthy-Fry MP, the new Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, an after dinner speech by Lord Adair Turner, and sessions on Wellbeing and the wider National Strategy for Financial Capability.
In his inaugural speech on consumers, Lord Turner outlined the increasing importance of protecting consumers through regulation but said that this must be dovetailed with improved consumer financial capability. The full text of the speech can be found on the FSA website, and a more detailed update about the conference, including summaries of the useful discussions and debate, will be available on the Financial Capability website shortly.
