Confronting debt at the final hurdle
Throughout my time at university I had always worked to support myself. But by the final year I was finding it increasingly difficult to fit in all the extra hours necessary to keep afloat financially while keeping my studies on track.
In addition to my student loan of £16,000, I had an overdraft and debts on credit and store cards. I also owed my Grandparents £3,000.
Initially I was angry at having to go to The Money Doctors as I had done everything possible to support myself. They were very sympathetic but at the same time encouraged me to confront my debt. I was advised to change my credit card, explore the possibility of turning my bank overdraft into a graduate loan and pay creditors who charged the highest interest first. They also helped me to draw up a plan to pay back my grandparents when I started my new full-time graduate job at the Civil Service.
My experiences at university could so easily have turned sour if I had left with nothing but debts. The Money Doctors stepped in when I could no longer cope and helped me turn the situation around.
